I've always lived in a sustainable household for my whole life without even knowing it...

Since my childhood, I grew up in a family that produces continuously and wastes very little. My family, until this day, grows our food in our garden according to the season; my mother tries not to waste anything, even the clothes we have. We would wear clothes that we bought for years; if we ripped them while playing on the street, my mother or grandma would always stitch them, and we kept wearing them until they were no longer wearable. I remember; my grandmother used to make floor mops out of unwearable clothes. And I always loved to use tote bags that my mother made from jeans that we could no longer use. Not only just our clothes but also nothing we eat would be a waste in our household. We would give our leftovers to our chickens, dogs or cats. Since our house is far from the city centre, we would also put containers outside and feed animals with our leftovers in the forest.


Of course, while doing these, they didn't know that their action had a name(sustainability/zero waste life), and yet my grandmother is still unaware. Mostly, it was not a place for anything to be a waste in our society, but sometimes they would do these because of financial situations. They had an ecological solution to everything, and for them, everything was sustainable. What my family has done allowed me and the people like me who grew up in small communities to spend money more sensibly and ask ''WHY'' before buying anything. This is one of the most significant factors for me to create this slow fashion business. I've learnt from my family about zero waste life and that a sustainable life is possible for all of us; even if it is baby steps, it will possibly create a domino effect.


In 2018, I left my small town and came to Australia to better my future and continue my education here. However, after this fast fashion and crazy clothing industry that I saw here in a big city Sydney, I even tried to keep up with it for a while, and I realized that it was impossible for me or anyone else. Just pick out any major brand and imagine the collection numbers yearly; you most likely don't see the same item twice in a row. Real fact for you; Zara puts out 24 collections per year, while H&M offers between 12 and 16. How could we even keep up with their fast fashion industry?
Besides these, environmental crises continue to become more and more apparent in time, and I think we need to start thinking about what can we do as individuals.
Just another example of the fact that fast fashion has created, a single non-organic cotton item will require around 700 gallons of water to produce, whereas organic cotton will use 91% less to produce, thanks to the fewer water pollutions and healthier soil from runoff.


This and thousands of other examples can be counted, but as a sum up, my mother and I know that we have one planet that everyone needs to hold tightly. As I always say, change always creates a domino effect, and we always deserve the best.
