One of the best things about muslin is that it gets better with age. With a little care, your muslin bedding will become softer, more relaxed and more beautiful with every wash. Here's everything you need to know to keep it looking and feeling its best.
Washing your muslin bedding
- Machine wash on a gentle cycle at 30°C. Our 4 and 5 layer blankets can go up to 40°C.
- Use a mild detergent. Gentle, everyday liquid detergents work best.
- No bleach. Bleach can weaken the cotton fibres and fade the colour.
- Give it space. Muslin blankets are generous in size, so avoid overloading the machine. This helps them rinse properly and keeps the layers soft.
- Wash similar colours together, especially for the first few washes.
Drying your muslin bedding
- Line drying is the easiest option. Muslin is light and dries quickly in the sun and breeze.
- Tumble drying on low also works well, and many people find it makes the blanket feel even softer and fluffier over time.
- For darker colours, dry in the shade where you can to help keep the colour rich.
Do I need to iron it?
No. The soft crinkle is part of muslin's natural charm and what gives it that relaxed, lived-in look. Just shake it out and spread it over the bed.
Why does muslin get softer?
Every wash relaxes the cotton fibres and the layers settle together, so the blanket becomes softer, more cosy and drapes more beautifully over time. That's why muslin is one of the few things that genuinely feels better after a year than on day one.
Small things to know
- Loose threads: it's natural for a small thread to appear now and then. Simply trim it with scissors, never pull it.
- Storing: keep spare blankets folded in a cool, dry place. A breathable cotton bag is better than plastic.
- Washing often: in summer you may wash your bedding more often. Muslin handles regular washing well, which is one of the reasons it's so easy to live with.
