It's one of the questions we hear most: "I ordered a 5 layer blanket, but it looks like one layer!" It's a fair question. Muslin is very different from the thick, heavy blankets most of us grew up with. So let's explain exactly what's going on, and show you the layers for yourself.
Each layer is very fine
Muslin is a light, airy cotton gauze. A single layer of muslin is so fine you can almost see through it. That's what makes it so soft and breathable.
A 4, 5 or 7 layer blanket is made by joining several of these fine layers together. Even with many layers, the blanket stays light and airy. It will never feel like a thick wool blanket or a puffy doona, and that's the whole point.
See the layers for yourself
In this short video, we're separating the layers of a 4 layer muslin blanket during production, before it goes through its first wash:
Why the layers seem to disappear after washing
Before washing, the layers sit flat and you can easily pull them apart, just like in the video. After washing, the cotton gauze crinkles and the layers settle into each other. That's what creates the soft, cloud-like texture muslin is loved for.
Once that happens, the blanket looks and feels like one soft piece of fabric. But all of the layers are still there, working together to keep you comfortable.
How to check the layers on your blanket
- Look at the edge. Gently roll the edge of the blanket between your fingers and you'll be able to feel the separate layers.
- Hold it up to the light. A single layer of muslin lets a lot of light through. Your blanket won't, because several layers are stacked together.
- Compare the weight. If you have a 4 layer and a 7 layer, you'll notice the 7 layer is warmer and has more weight.
Light doesn't mean thin on comfort
The fine layers are exactly what make muslin special. Air moves through them, so they stay breathable on warm nights, while the stacked layers still give you warmth and that soft, cosy feeling. More layers means more warmth and more weight, which is why we offer 4, 5 and 7 layers to suit different sleepers and seasons.
