Australian summer nights can be long, warm and sticky. If you've ever kicked the doona off at 2am and then woken up chilly at 5am, you're not alone. The right bedding won't change the weather, but it can make a big difference to how comfortable you feel. Here's what to look for, and how to set up your bed for summer.

Why fabric matters in summer

When it's warm, you want bedding that lets air move and doesn't hold onto heat. Many synthetic fabrics, like polyester, tend to trap warmth close to your body. Natural cotton breathes much better, which is why it's a favourite for warmer months.

Why muslin works so well

Muslin is a light, loosely woven cotton. That open weave is what makes it ideal for summer:

  • It breathes. Air can move through the layers, so warmth doesn't build up under the covers.
  • It's light. You get a soft layer over you without feeling weighed down.
  • The crinkled texture. Muslin's natural crinkle means less fabric sits flat against your skin, so it feels airy rather than clingy.
  • It gets softer with every wash. Perfect for summer, when bedding gets washed more often.

All of our muslin bedding is 100% cotton and OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified.

Which layer count for summer?

If you're new to muslin, our blankets come in 4, 5 and 7 layers. For summer:

  • 4 layer is the lightest and best for hot sleepers and the warmest nights.
  • 5 layer is a great all-rounder if you want one blanket that works all year.
  • 7 layer is our cosiest, so save it for autumn and winter.

How about waffle blankets?

Our waffle blankets are another good summer option. The open waffle weave keeps air moving, and they look beautiful folded at the end of the bed, ready for cooler mornings.

5 tips for a cooler bed this summer

  1. Swap the doona for muslin. Pack the heavy doona away and use a muslin blanket as your top layer.
  2. Layer instead of piling on. Keep a light throw at the end of the bed for the cooler early hours, rather than sleeping under something heavy all night.
  3. Choose lighter colours. Soft neutrals like beige, ecru and white keep the bedroom feeling fresh and calm.
  4. Match your pillowcases. Cotton pillowcases feel cooler against your face than synthetic ones.
  5. Wash and air often. Muslin dries quickly on the line and comes back softer each time.
