If you've been browsing our muslin blankets, you've probably noticed they come in 4, 5 and 7 layers. It's one of the questions we get asked most: what's actually the difference, and which one should I choose? Here's a simple guide to help you pick the one that suits the way you sleep.
What do the layers actually mean?
Muslin is a light, airy cotton weave. On its own, a single layer is thin and almost see-through. Our blankets stack several layers of muslin and stitch them together, which creates that soft, crinkled, cloud-like texture.
The more layers, the warmer and cosier the blanket feels, and the more weight it has on the bed. Because every layer is a breathable cotton weave, air can still move through, so even our thickest blanket doesn't trap heat the way a synthetic quilt can.
All of our muslin bedding is made from 100% cotton and is OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified, and every layer count gets softer with each wash.
4 layers: light and airy
Our 4 layer muslin blankets, including the Pure Bliss bedspreads, are the lightest in the range. They feel soft and relaxed, with just enough body to sit nicely on the bed.
Best for:
- Hot sleepers
- Warm Australian summers
- Layering over a sheet or doona
- Throwing over the end of the bed or the sofa
Available in Single, Double and King sizes, with matching pillowcases in many colours.
5 layers: the all-rounder
The Serenity 5 layer muslin quilt sits right in the middle. It has a little more weight and warmth than the 4 layer, but it still feels light and breathable. If you only want one blanket for the whole year, this is the one we'd recommend.
Best for:
- All seasons
- Couples where one person runs hot and the other runs cold
- A generous, oversized look on the bed
Available from Single up to Super King, plus a sofa throw and baby blanket size in selected colours.
7 layers: the cosy one
The Hazea 7 layer muslin blanket is our warmest and heaviest. It has a soft, comforting weight that feels like a hug, while staying breathable so you don't wake up overheated.
Best for:
- Cold sleepers
- Autumn and winter nights
- Anyone who loves a blanket with a bit of weight
Available in Queen and King sizes, with optional matching pillowcases.

Still not sure?
- Live somewhere warm? Start with the 4 or 5 layer.
- Always reaching for an extra blanket? Go for the 7 layer.
- Want to be covered all year? A good option is to keep a 4 layer for summer and a 7 layer for winter, or simply choose the 5 layer.
- Love a layered look? Fold a 4 layer blanket at the end of the bed over your 5 or 7 layer for extra texture and colour.
Whichever you choose, muslin is made to be lived in. The more you use and wash it, the softer and more relaxed it becomes.
